Insomnia is a condition in which the person affected has difficulty falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep. A lack of adequate sleep can lead to negative effects on our health. For example, the immune system may be adversely affected, as sleep plays a role in supporting the proper functioning of the immune system. It is estimated that one in 10 Americans are affected. There are a variety of factors that may contribute to sleepless nights, including stress, anxiety, and depression. Certain drugs, such as some anti-depressants and over-the-counter medications containing caffeine, may also contribute to insomnia.
Although sleep may be improved by behavioral therapies, medications are available to temporarily aid in improving sleep. Medications available with a prescription to improve sleep include zolpidem (Ambien), eszopiclone (Lunesta), zaleplon (Sonata), and ramelteon (Rozerem). These drugs are usually recommended for use on a short-term basis while combined with behavioral therapies. Trazodone (Desyrel),an anti-depressant, is also available for aiding sleep in persons affected by insomnia. Certain over-the-counter antihistamines may cause drowsiness and may be used occasionally. However, such drugs often do not continue to have the same effect with repeated use.
