Treatments for Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one type of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Angina, heart failure, and myocardial infarction (MI) are heart diseases as well. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of CHD, resulting from accumulation of fatty substances (such as cholesterol) in the arteries, which can become plaque over time. Plaque buildup leads to narrowed or blocked arteries. Shortness of breath, chest pain, and numbness or weakness in the legs or arms are symptoms of CHD. If a person has high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity the risk of CHD is increased.

Regular exercise is a good preventative measure against CHD. A diet composed of daily fruits and vegetables and high fiber also contributes to prevention of the condition. Medications for the reduction of blood pressure may be used in treatment of CHD. Chlorthalidone (Thalitone) a thiazide diuretic, and Lisinopril (Zestril, Prinivil) an ACE inhibitor,  may be prescribed to reduce blood pressure. These type of medications may also be prescribed for heart failure. Therapies for persons with angina may include nitrates such as nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur). Treatments for hypertension, angina, and heart failure may include beta-blockers, such as metoprolol (Lopressor).
