Canker Sore Treatments Available

Canker sores are small lesions or sores that occur on the soft tissue in and around the mouth, including the cheeks, lips, and gums. These sores are not contagious, however they may cause pain. A minor canker sore is oval in shape and likely will clear itself within two weeks. Major canker sores are larger lesions that may last for an extended period of time and lead to scarring. Canker sores may be a result of an abnormally functioning immune system, bacteria, certain foods, hormonal changes, or emotional stress.  In general, women are more susceptible to developing canker sores than men.

Although canker sores typically resolve without treatment, prescription and over-the-counter drugs are available to help relieve associated discomfort. Ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) are available over-the-counter for pain relief. Anbesol, Orajel, and Orabase, are other medications which are applied topically to decrease irritation to the sore when the person is eating or drinking. Equal amounts of Milk of Magnesia and Benadryl Allergy liquid are sometimes mixed to form an oral rinse. Drugs such as cimetidine (Tagamet) and colchicine, although indicated for other conditions, also may be useful for canker sores. As a last resort, oral steroid medications for short-term use may be prescribed.
