Pain Medicine Alternatives: Topical Agents

Pain in the muscles, joints, and nerves are commonly reported. It is often chronic and sometimes severe. The causes of pain include strains, sprains, other injury types, and overuse or misuse of certain parts of the body, as well as different forms of arthritis. Nerve pain can be related to medical conditions such as diabetes or shingles. Topical medications (an alternative to oral medicines) are applied directly to the site of pain and can eliminate side effects experienced with certain oral medications, such as stomach irritaion. Topical or local use of pain relievers can be a convenient alternative for those who have trouble swallowing pills.

Capsaicin is an ingredient for pain that is derived from cayenne peppers. Capsaicin, in the concentration of 0.025%-0.075%, is available over-the-counter in creams, ointments, lotions, gels, and a patch (Azsain, Capsin, Salonpas). A higher strength, capsaicin 8% (Qutenza) is prescription only patch for postherpetic neuralgia. Other options for muscle pain and arthritis include diclofenac, a prescription non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug available as a patch (Flector) and gel (Solaraze 3%, Voltaren 1%). Menthol is the active ingredient available over-the-counter in creams, patches, and sprays. It stimulates nerves and helps relieve pain.
