Corticosteroid Drugs Have Many Uses

Cortisol is a hormone in the body that is released by the body’s adrenal glands. This chemical is vital in regulating blood sugar levels, metabolism of fats and proteins, and the body’s reaction to stress. It is also important for its ability to reduce swelling. Cortisol levels can vary during certain times of the day, illness, or injury. Due to the vast effects of cortisol, more potent man-made versions of cortisol are frequently used to treat a wide array of health conditions. These drugs are known as corticosteroids and most are available only through prescription.

Prednisone (Sterapred), prednisolone (Millipred, Prelone), methylprednisolone (Medrol), and budesonide (Entocort) are corticosteroids that are taken by mouth for allergic reactions and asthma. Cortisteroids inhaled through the mouth such as beclomethasone (Qvar) are used for asthma. Nasal inhalations such as mometasone (Nasonex), triamcinolone (Nasocort), and fluticasone (Flonase) help with runny nose due to seasonal allergies. Swelling in the eyes can be treated with eye drops like fluorometholone (FML). A variety of skin conditions can be treated with topical corticosteroids like and betamethasone (Diprolene) and clobetasol (Clobex, Olux, Temovate), which are available as creams, lotions, ointments, and foams.
